Legacy Project

This year eighth grade students met in their advisory groups and elected to paint the ceiling tiles of the student lounge.  In keeping with the idea of a legacy being like a shadow that one casts - students brought the ceiling tiles outside and traced their silhouettes onto the ceiling tiles.  The students' silhouettes reflect their variety of interests:

Because we hoped to cast "bright shadows" we painted tints (tint=color+white) of complementary colors for the silhouettes and background.

The student lounge occupies a central space on the second floor.  It was re-purposed from being a teacher's lounge - a great space, but one that was in need of some aesthetic improvement!

VAA Blue Ribbon Ceremony, Huntsville Museum of Art

March is Youth Art Month, and all across North Alabama middle and high schools submit student artwork to be exhibited at the Huntsville Museum's Youth Art Month exhibit.  From those submissions, around 20 are selected to be Blue Ribbon Finalists - I was honored to have one of my students be among them!

Make a Guitar - Interim Week

During interim week, 6th graders choose from special enrichment offerings.  This year we upcycled cigar boxes to make these instruments - some are even electric!  Students developed skills with measuring, using tools, and used their creativity to make their instrument unique.

At the end of the week we visited the cigar box guitar studio at Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment - building guitars out of cigar boxes is a tradition that dates back to the Great Depression when people had little money to buy instruments. There, students had their work assessed by a master craftsman who treated them to a guitar lesson.  The students were thrilled to learn to play a variety of songs in just one sitting.
